Whiteout & The Truth about Lies

Thriller v horror, which stories are best? You decide.

Join Waterstones Children's Book Prize shortlistee Tracy Darnton, author of The Truth about Lies, and her opposition horror author of Whiteout, Gabriel Dylan, as they argue, sorry, discuss the merits of their different genre. This will be a battle that will be great fun and the outcome will depend on your vote.

Tracy’s debut The Truth About Lies is a thought-provoking YA novel, both mystery and thriller. At the centre is the character of Jess. Jess has an incredible memory. She can remember every single detail of every single day since she was eleven. But Jess would rather not be remarkable and, after years of testing at the hands of a ruthless research team, she has finally managed to escape.

Just when Jess thinks that she’s managing to settle in to living a normal life, everything changes. Her boarding-school roommate dies and then new boy Dan appears and Jess can’t help but find herself drawn to him. But building relationships is hard when you can’t reveal who you really are and Jess is getting hints that someone knows more about her than she would like. Is it time to run again? Will she ever be truly free?

Gabriel Dylan’s debut book Whiteout is set in a remote village surrounded by icy ski slopes where Charlie and his school party have been cut off by the weather from the rest of the world. This book is tense and scary as the students realize there is something out there, something ancient and evil, among the pines and the deep untracked drifts, watching and waiting. This is a page turner of a story with real surprises throughout and in the final chapter…
