John started singing unaccompanied traditional songs in The Seahorse Folk Club when he was 16. He has sung in festivals and clubs all over the British Isles, and in 1990 he was ‘shanghied’ by ‘landlocked’ a shanty crew from Doncaster. They sang at festivals and clubs as far-away as Hamburg.
